The U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia dismissed a lawsuit brought by the radical anti-hunting Center for Biological Diversity and six other groups demanding the Environmental Protection Agency ban traditional ammunition containing lead components. Traditional ammunition represents 95 percent of the U.S. market and is the staple ammunition for target shooters, hunters and law enforcement, with more than 10 billion rounds sold annually. NSSF filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit last August. The court today agreed with NSSF that EPA does not have the authority to regulate traditional ammunition under the Toxic Substances Control Act. EPA had already twice denied attempts by CBD to have the agency ban traditional ammunition, and the court had dismissed an earlier case brought by CBD seeking the same relief. “We are gratified that the court … Read entire article »

Knapp traveled the United States and world giving trick-shooting exhibitions for Winchester Olin, Benelli USA, Federal Cartridge and CZ-USA until his health issues forced him to retire in February. He had worked for what was then … Read entire article »

NEWTOWN, Conn. — The National Shooting Sports Foundation has strongly objected to the last-minute reversal of the U.S. government position regarding the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty. In the closing hours of negotiations on Thursday, March 28, the government abandoned its previous insistence that the treaty be approved only through achieving “consensus” of all the member states. Requiring consensus had been the United States position going back to earlier administrations. At the end of the session, a U.S. government spokesperson told reporters “It’s important to the United States and the defense of our interests to insist on consensus. But every state in this process has always been conscious of the fact that if consensus is not reached in this process, that there are other ways to adopt this treaty, including via … Read entire article »

We’re not trying to throw gas on a fire but the ammo situation is getting pretty bad. Mike Bellm had this entry in his newsletter and I thought it was worth sharing… Just a quick note primarily for those of you who tend to shoot just shoot a little in the fall and then go hunt. Others who are active shooters already are seeing what follows and likely have ammo and reloading supplies on hand to get yourselves through this year’s shooting activities. If you are not an active shooter and do not frequent the gun shops much in the off season, you may not be aware of the ammo shortage going on. Much of the talk at the SHOT Show this year was about manufacturers being swamped with orders due … Read entire article »

OK folks, time for a reality check. In the Encore, “deer” cartridges are normally considered bore sizes from .243/6mm on up through .30 cal. except for those states requiring .35 cal. or larger. While the majority of shots are certainly under 200 yards and most more like 100 yards or less, human nature being what it is we like to think in terms of reaching waaaaaay out there across an open field, down a power line clear cut, or across a canyon, and it is wise to have that capability when the opportunity for a good animal presents itself. Of course you have to have the accuracy to PLACE the shot where it counts and we have shown that quite often the 28″ Pro Hunter barrels while they MAY pick up some velocity … Read entire article »

The only April hunting season is turkey, and it lasts only five days for those lucky persons drawn by the Wisconsin DNR. Most years I remedied this void scouting for ruffed grouse and woodcock with the leaves down, the snow cover gone, and before the DNR April 15 nesting ban on unleashed bird dogs. This year my erstwhile grouse hunting buddies were down with Achilles problems (Zenas) or consumed with work(Jason and Two Dogs). We … Read entire article »

It is amazing sometimes what you find when you move. Yesterday, sifting, sorting, pitching I turned up a copy of Rifle Magazine #119 from September-October 1988. Interestingly, that copy was mailed out during the time I was moving my shop from Salt Lake City to Cleveland, UT. Now it pops up shortly after my move to Olathe, CO. Interesting also is the front cover. While the main subject is a Ransom Rest, what is in it … Read entire article »
