The only April hunting season is turkey, and it lasts only five days for those lucky persons drawn by the Wisconsin DNR. Most years I remedied this void scouting for ruffed grouse and woodcock with the leaves down, the snow cover gone, and before the DNR April 15 nesting ban on unleashed bird dogs. Kabetogama Lake in northern Minnesota is one of my all-time favorite walleye lakes in the world. Lots of walleyes, eater-size and bigger, are abundant on Kab. The lake has about one hundred fifty miles of shoreline, but only nine miles of the shoreline is developed, and that’s with resorts that fit the natural surroundings beautifully. It is amazing sometimes what you find when you move. Yesterday, sifting, sorting, pitching I turned up a copy of Rifle Magazine #119 from September-October 1988. Interestingly, that copy was mailed out during the time I was moving my shop from Salt Lake City to Cleveland, UT. Now it pops up shortly after my move to Olathe, CO.
