Normally, I really don’t like to be a name-dropper but I’ll tell you up front that Calvin Klein is a friend of mine! I know there are several out there that will not believe that I’ve actually been to Calvin’s home many times but I have! As it turns out many of you reading this story already know Calvin Klein and can call him a friend as well. For those of you yet to make his … Read entire article »
When I first started stabilizing/anchoring the front tip of scope bases a few months ago, I ordered in a box of 100 No. 6×32 screws for the task and am now down to about the last dozen screws. Meaning, I have nearly 100 such scope base installations out now. So far there has not been a lot of feedback from shooters with this treatment of the base, so your comments are certainly wanted, pro or con. YOU are the field test laboratory and the final word when it comes to success on the range and in the field. Please do feel free to let me know how these mountings work for you. Using more than just two scope rings adds to the rigidity of the base/ring/scope assembly, whether you … Read entire article »
In many areas of the Midwest this winter, there has been as much open water fishing going on as there has been ice-fishing. In a region where ice-fishing usually dominates in December and January, warmer than ordinary air temperature have enabled anglers to extend their open water fishing. There are obvious differences in ice-fishing and open water fishing, but when it comes to lure presentation, there are a good number of similarities. … Read entire article »

The 6mm bore size in general gets quite a bit of interest and serves such a broad spectrum of applications from varmint on up with some folks feeling quite comfortable using it on elk even. Accuracy is usually quite natural with it, recoil is modest, and there is such a broad, broad selection of bullet weights and styles available now, something that was rather lacking not too many years back when finding a good reliable game bullet was sometimes a problem. Not so today. I tend to speak what is on my mind, and with just doing a 6mm/06 Improved, 6mm is on my mind. .243 Win. is a very popular, well proven round, but tends to elicit a yawn as being about as mundane as .30/06 & .270 Win. Tire Tool and I have been planning to get a Concealed Carry permit if and when our current home state of Wisconsin finally enacted the legislation. Well, effective November 1, 2012, America’s Dairyland, joined the ranks of states making Concealed Carry of weapons legal. I signed us up with an instructor who has been doing classes for years for our neighboring Minnesotans and we sent our money and attended the day long course. The “Around the room,” in response to the question, “Why do you want to get a permit (or license depending on the state),” carried a host of answers. Tire Tool answered that he wanted a permit so he did not have to be concerned if his coat got flopped over his sidearm while out … Read entire article »
Out with the old, in with the new! Despite the calendar change, I seldom notice a difference in my life except when I go to write a check – which in this day and age, I seldom do anymore! Too easy to swipe a debit card! It is not that I am opposed to change; I just prefer a routine and tend to stick to the simple stuff. Speaking of simple, it’s been an easy winter so far – no snow, moderate temps – but oddly we have seen little game moving about. The river has frozen and thawed many times and most of the leaves on my yard trees refuse to fall making leaf raking a never ending task this year. What I appreciate the … Read entire article »

By Bob & Ginny Riege The evening of January 27th we received an email from Tom and Sue Brown informing us of the loss of a great sportsman, a tireless conservationist, teacher, coach, friend and fishing companion who touch many lives both in the fishing industry and in the classroom. The legendary Jim McDonnell “The Fishing Professor”, died Friday, January 27th, and was laid to rest January 31st in Royal, IA. He will be sorely missed … Read entire article »

Ref. Indiana’s deer regs. I’m going to stick my neck out a bit. Everyone in the Hoosier state it seems has been sure the 1.8″ case length regs would pass, and it appears it has. Previously, the increase in case length from 1.6″ to 1.8″ was just a proposal that many took as having been adopted. Some who have not gone the rounds long enough with the Encore are chambering barrels in .35 cal. based on the Winchester Short Mag case….. NOT a good idea. History has proven over and over again that when you push the Encore this hard with the larger diameter chambers, something suffers…. either frame or barrel lug. This continues to fall on deaf ears, but here goes. Stay with a chamber no larger in … Read entire article »

Fourteen years ago, my buddy Dave Leraas came to me with the idea that we should start applying for Black Hills elk tags. At the time it seemed like a great idea even though neither of us knew much about hunting elk. We started putting in our applications and building preference points. After a couple of years Dave moved to Iowa and I continued putting in applications by myself. Since then I was able to go … Read entire article »
By Jason Mitchell Many ice anglers associate the end of January and beginning of February with mid winter doldrums. Many anglers believe that first ice and late ice is the best ice for fishing and the in between ice… not so good. There is some truth to the midwinter doldrums particularly with smaller lakes. Now not to say a lake less than five hundred acres cannot be red hot in the middle of … Read entire article »
