Back at the beginning of the modern ice fishing revolution, Dave Genz started talking about the importance of mobility. Today’s ice anglers do not need to settle for sitting over unproductive holes at any time, but this is especially important during the daytime. It was Genz who helped us understand that, during midday hours, most fish are sitting tight. That’s because the chain of life is on pause, when compared with the rapidly changing light levels … Read entire article »

With wheels under you ground can be gained, distance covered, and many of those once upon a time tough hunts are now easier on older, and even young hunters. Make no mistake about it, the modern development of the ATV, off road 4X4’s, and amphibious water / land craft systems have turned many forms of hunting into very workable events for those that had to sit on the side lines, or were “ distance limited” … Read entire article »

Game, Fish and Parks to Host Meetings on Missouri River Fisheries PIERRE, S.D. — Interested members of the public are invited to a series of meetings that will be held in early February to discuss 2011 Missouri River flood impacts on reservoir fisheries in South Dakota. Department of Game, Fish and Parks staff will present 2011 Missouri River fisheries data and discuss the impacts that historic flows on the Missouri River may have on those popular fisheries. “Anglers have many questions about last year’s Missouri River flooding,” said Mark Fincel, GFP senior fisheries biologist. “Our staff did flood-monitoring throughout the high-water period, and these meetings are a good chance for the public to learn the results of that sampling.” Meeting dates, times and locations are as follows: · Feb. … Read entire article »
Do you have a hunting buddy that just doesn’t get it? All he ever talks or cares about is bagging that limit of birds or shooting the biggest buck. Well it might not be that your buddy doesn’t get, rather you both might be in different stages of your hunting lives. The concept of hunting stages is nothing new. In fact it is a concept that is so basic that it is taught to every HuntSAFE class throughout the state and most of the nation. There are five stages that make up this concept. They include the Shooter Stage, the Limiting-Out Stage, the Trophy Stage, the Method Stage, and the Sportsman Stage. Most hunters will fit into one of these stages and most will progress … Read entire article »
Appeared in 2009 Outdoorsmen Tom, Here are some deer pictures of the boys. Both the boys got their deer in NE Iowa near the town of Fredericksburg. Anthony is 15 in his picture and he shot his 4 point buck at 60 yards using his Mossberg 20 gauge. He had two bucks come in with a doe and all three went through his shooting lane and proceed to romp around up the fence line from our stand. … Read entire article »

Few see them. Others either dismiss the sightings as hooey or are cursed to believe but never catch even a fleeting glimpse of one. These, you might call freshwater poltergeists, can be as common as the ghosts of missing mariners on pirate vessels, but still scarcely witnessed. Believers see them. Brian “Bro” Brosdahl sees them, and then catches them like genies in a bottle. Bro is haunted by humungous panfish. They keep him awake at night. … Read entire article »

From one section of a lake to another, winter water clarity differences can be detected, says Dave Genz. Subtle, but noticeable. Riled-up water leaves clues about possible presence of shallow ‘gills. More and more, this series of ice fishing articles will feature the latest thoughts and theories developed by Dave Genz as he spends darn near every winter day on the ice somewhere. No one ever has, or ever will, fish as much through the ice … Read entire article »

Kind of as a forewarning if you are prone to swapping scope bases and thinking of having me install a scope base, I have always put scope bases on to stay, torque them down tight, and use permanent Loctite. Naturally, even I cringe a little at having to remove one of my own scope base mounting jobs. One method is to use a #27 drill to drill through the head of the screw down to the screw shank itself. Once the head is drilled off, you lift the base off the screws and can usually grip the screw shank with pliers to unscrew them. But this is the more radical, last ditch method when screw driver, torx bit, or allen wrench won’t budge them and/or you booger the heads and can’t get … Read entire article »
By Mitch Eegan More anglers than you’d think eat bait. Not because they have to as a result of today’s hard economic times, but simply because they want to. Now I’m not talking nibbling on waxies and grated white cheddar sprinkled over a wheat wafer, but instead, gorging on a main course of succulent smelt after an evening of intentionally targeting these fanged torpedoes through the ice. It’s all because smelt—the very silvery-sided forage that pack … Read entire article »
